Plant Information

About the Monardas This is a hybrid of the famous American wildflower with the bright red crown-shaped flowers, a description of the large scarlet blooms everyone and every hummingbird loves.

There are other species, but our famous Monarda or Bee Balm is native from the far north all the way south to Georgia, it was first discovered by world famous plant explorer John Bartram during the colonial era. Since its a member of the mint family with fragrant foliage, Bee Balm was always a medicinal plant of the native Americans, and today adds wonderful color to perennial gardens and wildflower meadows. Its a strong-growing perennial that likes moisture, and will grow in sun or partial shade.

As with all Bee Balms, the bloom begins in mid-summer, and if you cut off spent flowers for about three weeks, you'll extend the blooming into fall.

I added it to my own garden where the usual Bee Balm would be too tall.

Comments about American Meadows Marshall's Delight Bee Balm:

These will likely be in better shape spring 2018. Other, bigger plants overshadowed them this year. They will rest and root over the winter and I'm looking forward to seeing them around June.

I bought 2 and I was surprised that such a small plant grew to 3 feet in a few months. No flowers yet. Hopefully next year. Nice healthy plant.

Comments about American Meadows Marshall's Delight Bee Balm:

I planted a huge perennial garden in 2014. My first garden ever. I ordered this plant and it arrived and it was small but it tripled in size within two months. I have given so much of it away in two years and still have tons. One of my very favorite in my garden!!

It was a tiny thing when it arrived but it survived our wicked summer and is spreading like I wanted. No blooms this year but I have high hopes for next!

Comments about American Meadows Marshall's Delight Bee Balm:

This variety was not hardy for me in Pacific Northwest. Described as a mildew resistant variety, it suffered from powdery mildew early in the season despite the fact that we had an extremely dry, non-humid summer. Did not bloom this first season. Initially the first shipment was puny and failed to survive. The no hassle replacement order was shipped from a different location...plants were bigger and hardy. But even so, the plant did not live up to expectations. I have grown different varieties of this plant with great success in the past.

The plant was small when it arrived in the spring, so it's not saying much for it to say it doubled in size. It did have one very attractive bloom. Maybe it will grow next year.

            Q & A

            Plant With These:

            USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

            • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
            • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
