Black Mondo Grass has exceptional dark foliage that provides high contrast in garden designs. Dense near-black clumps look beautiful massed as a groundcover, and provide dramatic color in small space gardens. Tuck this plant anywhere you need rich texture and lasting color - mass along pathways and bed edges, tuck along rock walls, plant between stepping stones, and add contrast to containers. This low-maintenance groundcover provides year-long interest. (Ophiopogon planiscapus)

USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

  • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
  • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).

Plant Information

6-12” tall x 9-12” wide. Black Mondo Grass is slow growing but worth the wait. Equally at home in Asian-themed, contemporary, and woodland designs. Plants thrive in rich, well-drained soils with even moisture. The, narrow, arching leaves need adequate light for full color, but do not tolerate hot sun. Drought tolerant once established. Grow in bright, open shade in hot regions or provide dappled shade or cool morning sun in more temperate climates. Plant alongside bright contrasting colors like chartreuse or white variegated foliage. If plants need tidying, cut foliage back in spring  before new growth emerges.
