Bleeding Hearts, also known as Dicentra, literally light up shady areas with their elegant long stems and famous heart-shaped flowers. There are two basic types of plants, the larger ones (to 30") with arching stems that bloom in spring, and the smaller "fern-leaf" types that keep blooming all summer. However they're used, Bleeding Hearts make fantastic companion plants for ferns, hostas, astilbe, and other shade-lovers. Bleeding heart are deer resistant, easy to grow, and dependably perennial.
