Plant Information

36-48" tall, 12-36" wide. This is one of the most beautiful milkweeds. Not the common dusty-dull rose-flowered farm weed, but a really beautiful red-flowered form with much more refined foliage and habits. And like the orange-flowered Butterfly Weed, this one is a monarch magnet, great for butterfly gardens.

The milkweed family of North American plants is named Asclepias after Asclepias, the famous Greek God of Medicine, since the plants have long been used in herbal medicine.

This Asclepias, with its glowing red flowerheads, is best placed in a wet spot, or at least one that is wet part of the year, since that is its native habitat.

Native Range for Asclepias incarnata (Swamp Milkweed) - AL, AR, CO, CT, DC, DE, FL, GA, IA, ID, IL, IN, KS, KY, LA, MA, MD, ME, MI, MN, MO, MT, NC, ND, NE, NH, NJ, NM, NV, NY, OH, OK, PA, RI, SC, SD, TN, TX, UT, VA, VT, WI, WV, WY.

Perfect Plant for Butterfly "growing"

This plant is hardy and the only plant that Monarchs lay eggs on. Last year I "grew" my own butterflies:)

I received this plant as a gift purchased by my daughter specifically because it was shown on the website as pink. It has very pure white flowers which while pretty, do not really fit into my overall color scheme/layout in the garden. I am extremely disappointed.

Comments about American Meadows Swamp Milkweed Cinderella:

Delighted to receive our Cinderella Butterfly Weed plants--3 bare root plants in a bag. Very well packed. The root systems were large, healthy, and well branched. I was impressed with the quality. The plants went into the ground the day following receipt, and I now have heavy top growth 5 inches high. I am very pleased with my purchase.

I ordered 9 plants; planted 6 and gave 3 away. None of my 6 ever bloomed, but I planted in early May and may not have provided enough water. Huge number of yellow aphids -- have never seen yellow aphids here before, and I couldn't get rid of them (tried blasting with water, and hand rubbing them off the plants -- they just kept coming back). Maybe I didn't do enough for them, or maybe they are difficult plants to maintain???

Hopefully they will overwinter ok and be better next year.

None of them ever budded but I think that is because I got them in the ground late and we had a very dry summer. I'll remember that next year and get them in much earlier. Horrible attack of yellow aphids -- never have seen them before I got this butterfly weed.

This plant is hardy and the only plant that Monarchs lay eggs on. Last year I "grew" my own butterflies:)

                        Q & A

                        Plant With These:

                        USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

                        • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
                        • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
