Plant Information

Cardinal-flowers kindle their spiral flames, and illuminate the dark nooks among the shrubbery.
...Nathanial Hawthorne, The Old Manse

Anyone who's ever taken a hike in midsummer woods anywhere in the east probably knows this stunning plant. Cardinal flowers bloom with tall spikes of lipstick red flowers in August in wet American woodlands all the way from Canada to Louisiana.

Queen Victoria at about 3 feet is a little shorter than the native, and the color is a little deeper velvety red. You'll love these vivid flowers as much as the hummingbirds. Pick a moist spot in sun or partial shade for yours.

Plants arrived healthy and vibrant- packaged very well, protected, and the soil is moist. We are putting them in native rain garden in MN- full sun and moist, well drained soil.

While it didn't look great when it arrived, I planted it quickly and it seemed to get established very well. Then ... the deer ate it and it never recovered! I had bought it because it was listed as "deer resistant" or "deer tend to avoid", so that was disappointing. I gave it 3 stars because it probably would have done great!

Comments about American Meadows Queen Victoria Lobelia:

Got two plants in about a month ago with beautiful purple leaves. The plants have lost most of their delicate purple leaves for very hardy green leaves... We shall see.

Comments about American Meadows Queen Victoria Lobelia:

These plants are beautiful and grew fast for a few months. They got to 4' tall and were flowering. The foliage color and broght red flowers are stunning. Then I went out of town for a week when it was rainy, and I returned to these poor plants destroyed by snails. There were snails all over the short little nubs that were left. I immediately got some Sluggo, but it was too late to save them. I learned my lesson! Just be sure to control any snail population if you order these. The leaves must be delicious because no other plants were touched by the snails. I may order these plants again next spring since they were so pretty, and hardy up until the snail debacle.

Planted this year. Healthy plants arrived & grew quickly, however there are only about 5 2-3' tall stems that are now falling over. Both plants have flowered. Hope they survive the winter & come back bushier and are able to stay upright.

I had big plans for this plant, but sadly it decided it didn't want to exist in my garden. Lasted a month but didn't do anything but slowly wilt.
I'll be trying again but a different location.

This had been doing fine for the first few weeks it was in the ground. We had several days over 90 degrees, and it died. I wish it had been shipped earlier, as it's not unusual for this area to be over 90 in April.

Comments about American Meadows Queen Victoria Lobelia:

I ordered two cardinal plants. One was placed in a crowded wild flower garden and did exceptionally well. Tall, long lasting blooms that a hummingbird found and loved - more than the hummer feeder that was right next to it! The other was planted in a cut garden bed 12 feet away in the same sunlight and barely survived pest damage (and was treated with dust). It has just now (late August) started to bloom, but is less than 1/4 the height of the strong plant. Mixed feelings.

We moved to USA few years ago. We never saw a hummingbird in nature and my kids were not familiar with North American native plants. So I ordered 3 bulbs of Cardinal flower last year. But they did not make it. This spring I got replacement from American Meadows. This time they were in must better condition. They started to bloom in July. Now they are taller than me (I am about 160cm) and hummingbirds come to us everyday.

                        Plant With These:

                        USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

                        • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
                        • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
