'Little Lanterns' Columbine is a famous native wildflower, growing along woodland edges from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico. Brilliantly colorful with nodding, trumpet-shaped crimson and yellow flowers, this short and showy variety is a favorite of hummingbirds. 'Little Lanterns' shares its blooms from early spring to mid summer. (Aquilegia canadensis)
To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low
temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.
If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will
survive the winter temperatures in your area.
If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack
of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
Whether you're a human or a hummingbird, this is going to be one of your favorite flowers. 'Little Lanterns' Columbine, also called Wild Red Columbine, Canadian Columbine and Eastern Red Columbine, is famous world wide. It's commonly seen growing all the way from Canada to the Gulf Coast, and is a good garden plant almost anywhere. These plants literally cover themselves with their famous, bobbing red and yellow flowers in spring.
Allen Armitage tells us even Thomas Jefferson cultivated this native wildflower at Monticello! It belongs in every American wildflower garden.
