Airy, lacy, and graceful, the native Maidenhair Fern is known for its grassy green foliage and jet-black stems. Delicate fronds form in a circular pattern on tough, cold hardy plants. Choose a shady locale for this woodland beauty, or be sure to give extra water when planting in sunnier spots. Naturalizes with ease in moist soils. (Adiantum pedatum)

Plant Information

If there were a beauty contest for these plants, this is the clear winner, at least in the judgement of most gardeners. This is beautiful American Maidenhair, a delicate but tough native of woods all the way from Canada to Georgia. In early spring, fine black stems reach high, and then suddenly unfurl into flat tray-like hands of delicate fronds, arrayed in a perfect circle. All Maidenhair asks is a moist shady spot and plenty of rich wood soil. It's magnificent with Trillium and other spring flowers.

Q & A

Plant With These:

USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

  • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
  • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
