USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

  • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
  • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).

Plant Information

Helenium autumnale is a joyful golden addition to native and pollinator-friendly gardens. Great for rain gardens or low-lying garden sites, plant in a sunny spot somewhat protected from high winds in moist to average soil. In late summer, Helenium autumnale blooms with golden daisy-like flowers with prominent centers, which are composed of tiny disc flowers. Helenium autumnale has a broad native range across the US and most of Canada, and is recognized by The Xerces Society for its value to native bees. Deadheading will encourage new flowers. Pairs beautifully with other native perennials such as Joe Pye Weed, Iron Weed, or Blazing Star. Helenium is pollenated by insects, not by wind; it is commonly called sneezeweed, though not from the effects of its pollen - historically, its dried leaves were used to make a form of snuff.
