Glowing Embers is a deep red, a color that is bred into the plant. But like all hydrangeas, the colors may vary a bit once you plant it.
About Hydrangeas: These popular shrubs, also called Hortensia, all have rounded flower clusters that persist through summer and fall. There are several types, since there are several species of the plant the hybridizers work with:
H. macrophylla or French Hydrangeas. These, the most popular, form non-rangy, attractive shrubs about 4 to 6 ft. tall, and are famed for their big, colorful ball-like flowers, usually blue or pink. The popular group here is called Mophead hydrangeas. Artificially shortened versions are sold in pots on Easter and Mothers Day, and the blooms are florists favorites, always popular for wedding decorations. In addition to the mopheads (solid ball of flowers), there are also lacecap versions of these hydrangeas. (H. macrophylla is native to the Far East.)
H. arborescens, a US native, includes the widely-planted, Annabelle. Much like the Mopheads, Annabelle is a shorter hydrangea with huge rounded flower clusters in pure white. This is the one famous for flowers so large they often weigh down the branches, needing special support.
H. paniculata, is a larger species, much taller than the Mopheads. The flower clusters are more cone-shaped, rather than round. The plant in this group is more rangy than the shorter types, but can be controlled by pruning. The famous Pee Gee hydrangea, often grown as a small tree is in this group, and was imported from Japan in the late 19th century. There are also newer H. paniculata hybrids, including the beautiful greenish-flowered one called Limelight.
Other Types: There are several other important hydrangeas. The tall native Oakleaf hydrangea (sometimes considered a small tree) is also a variety of the species, H. paniculata.

Comments about American Meadows Mophead Hydrangea Glowing Embers:
When the plant arrived, it was just a little dead looking stick. I planted it and cared for it. It did live, but it did not grow well and is still very small now, 6 months later. Insects attacked it in August and it looks pretty pitiful now. I am not sure if it will make it till next year.

Comments about American Meadows Mophead Hydrangea Glowing Embers:
Ordered this product as part of a pre-sale. Waited a long time to get it and the product is only 2 inches tall! I'm going to have to wait years to see if this thing produces any flowers. Let's hope it makes it through the year.

Comments about American Meadows Mophead Hydrangea Glowing Embers:
I needed a compact plant in the front border of the house (part sun/shade) that would have a range of color interest most of the year, compliment the brick color of the house, and not overgrow the lg front window. This hydrangea appears that it will fit the bill. I was impressed that 2 of the 3 plants bloomed this first year. I have high expectations for the years to come. I usually do not have good luck w/mail order plants, but more plants like this hydrangea will keep me ordering.

Comments about American Meadows Mophead Hydrangea Glowing Embers:
The hydrangea came as a twig. I got it going but it needed constant watering. It didn't grow as much as some of the other hydrangeas I got from [@] and a local greenhouse. Not really impressed with it, especially with how expensive it was.

I use i for border control. They have a long bloom time and big but they grow is very slow! The colors are gorgeus!
Comments about American Meadows Mophead Hydrangea Glowing Embers:
I purchased three of these plants last year and after planting them, they lost all foliage and looked like sad little sticks poking out of the garden. I was hopeful that they were merely in shock and would recover but alas, no foliage or signs of life the following year.
I was offered free replacement plants from American Meadows but chose to replace them with bulbs which I can seem to grow. I have had specatacular luck with bulbs for American Meadows but not as much luck with the plants. May you have better luck than I.

Comments about American Meadows Mophead Hydrangea Glowing Embers:
WE INHERITED A HYDRANGEA MACROPHYLLA WHEN WE MOVED INTO OUR HOUSE. I KNEW NOTHING ABOUT PLANTS AND THOUGHT THAT IT WAS SOME KIND OF WILD THISTLE OR WEED, SO I MOWED IT COMPLETELY DOWN. IT WAS ONLY ABOUT TWO YEARS OLD AND IT WAS NOT BUT ABOUT 14-16 INCHES TALL. I MOWED IT DOWN IN THE SPRING AND BY SUMMER, IT WAS HUGE AND HEALTHY. DON'T BE AFRAID TO PRUNE. IT IS NOW ABOUT 5-5 1/2 FEET TALL AND MY NEIGHBORS COMMENT ON HOW GORGEOUS AND HOW HUGE IT IS.

It may be a couple year before I will get to see it in bloom. Didn't realize how small it was going to be. I sure it will be worth the wait.
