Like a golden sun setting over a deep red sea, Bearded Iris ‘Ancient Echoes’ is a thrilling combo of bright gold upright petals (standards) and rich, velvety burgundy falls (downward petals). Beautifully proportioned and sweetly fragrant the lower petals are edged in apricot-rose. A mid-season bloomer, this Iris makes beautiful stand-alone cut flowers. (Iris germanica)

Plant Information

32-34" tall x 18" wide. Richly colored, Bearded Iris ‘Ancient Echoes’ greets us with lush burgundy-black falls edged in peach, topped with a golden crown of ruffled petals. Large bloomed and fragrant, it flowers in mid-season. Remove spent blooms as they expire and cut the stems at the base when all the blooms have faded. Plant in average, well-drained soil in a sunny location. When the rhizomes become crowded (3-4 years) dig them up at season’s end (summer) - clean, divide and re-plant the healthiest rhizomes, or share with friends and spread the glory! Bearded Iris are low-care, critter resistant and pollinator friendly garden favorites.

Comments about American Meadows Bearded Iris Ancient Echoes:

This iris bloomed the March after I planted it, in November. The plant is strong and the blooms are large. The only issue is that the color is off. Instead of the bottom color being burgundy, it is more of a deep purple.

Q & A

Plant With These:

USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

  • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
  • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
