USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

  • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
  • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).

Plant Information
24-36" tall x 18" wide. Light up spring with Summer Olympics Reblooming Bearded Iris. Bright yellow standards (upright petals) and matching falls (downward petals) that whiten in the center around lemon-yellow beards. Lightly fragrant, they almost shout with ruffled exuberance! One of the earliest Bearded Iris to bloom, they dependably bloom again throughout the summer. Plant them with spring bloomers such as Tulips, Daffodils, Allium, and Larkspur (Delphinium). Also give their flowers company in the summer garden with Hummingbird Mint (Agastache), Sage (Salvia), and Coneflower (Echinacea). Plant the spring bulbs around the summer perennials, and they will bloom while the summer bloomers are just beginning to stir. It's the perfect way to create a progression of flower companions for reblooming Iris. Summer Olympics makes great cut flowers too. Cut them in the morning, just as the buds are beginning to swell. Keep them out of direct sun and enjoy them in spring and summer flower bouquets. Plant rhizomes (bulbs) in a location with full sun to part-shade and well-drained soil. Keep the top of the rhizome even or just above the soil. Water well during blooming, but don't overwater. The sword-shaped foliage adds a vertical element to both garden and vase.
