Bunny Tail Grass just might be the most adorable plant we offer. Kids young and old find the fluffy white “tails” irresistible to touch and gardeners love how easy this plant is to grow. Plumes emerge chartreuse in early summer, shifting to soft ivory and white as they brighten containers and gardens with long-lasting texture. (Lagurus ovatus)

USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

  • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
  • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).

Plant Information
12-24" tall x 10-12" wide. Bunny Tail Grass (Lagurus ovatus), with timely cutting, is one of the few annual plants that offer year-round beauty. Autumn turns the plumes a rich tan hue as seed heads dry right on the plant. Cut these for long-lasting texture in dried arrangements. Unlike many grasses, the heads of Bunny Tail Grass do not shatter (drop seed) with age, so cuttings last for months or years when dried properly. In the garden, plants perform best in a well-drained soil and thrive in sandy locations where other plants struggle. Give them plenty of sunshine and water to establish. Plants are drought tolerant once the roots take hold. Drainage is a must for this plant, consider amending clay soil or growing in containers if garden drainage is poor. Flowers top a compact mound of downy green foliage.
