Prairie Blazing Star is a stunning native wildflower with distinctive floral spikes packed with fluffy rose-purple blooms. Flowers open in sequence, starting at the top, for weeks of color during the hottest part of late summer. The tallest Liatris species in cultivation, this pollinator magnet attracts bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds, and makes an excellent cut flower. Plant for a striking vertical element in your garden or meadow planting. (Liatris pycnostachya)
To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low
temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.
If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will
survive the winter temperatures in your area.
If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack
of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
Prairie Blazing Star is a summer standout in perennial borders, pollinator gardens, and meadow plantings. Flowers are pollinated primarily by long-tongued bees, butterflies, and skippers. The Xerces Society designates this plant as having special value to native bees, and other bee visitors include honeybees, bumblebees, carpenter bees, miner bees, halictine bees, and large leaf-cutting bees. Butterflies frequenting Prairie Blazing Star include Monarchs, Swallowtails, Painted Ladies, Sulfurs, and others. Native to prairies and bluffs throughout the central United States, this species tolerates a variety of soils, including clay, though it also thrives with moist, well-drained soils. While Prairie Blazing Star tolerates more moisture than other Liatris species, plants do not tolerate wet winter soils. Plant it among other native beauties like Coneflower, Anemone, Sneezeweed, and Ornamental Grass.
