Purple Fountain Grass is among the most prized ornamental grasses, celebrated for its rosy plumes and maroon foliage. Nodding flower spikes arch gracefully away from the upright foliage, providing elegant architecture and a dramatic accent in sunny beds. Plant as a focal point in containers. The ruby plumes make stylish cut flowers, fresh or dried. (Pennisetum setaceum ‘Rubrum’)

Plant Information

36-48" tall x 18-24" wide. Purple Fountain Grass is as versatile as it is reliable. Gorgeous when massed in flowing waves through the landscape or in clusters for big impact. Plants provide a contrast in texture and color ideal for repetition throughout the garden. Flower stalks appear mid-summer and remain to provide interest through the winter. Unlike other pennisetums, Purple Fountain Grass does not reseed in the garden. This drought tolerant grass is grown as an annual in all but the warmest regions, but its rapid growth provides quick color in any location. In regions where winter temperatures remain above 20 degrees F, Purple Fountain Grass can be grown as a perennial and cut back in early spring. New growth will initiate as the temperatures climb. Easy to grow and pest-free.

Perennials and spring-planted bulbs are shipped at the proper planting time for your hardiness zone. Perennial and spring-planted bulb orders will arrive separately from seeds. Q & A

Plant With These:

USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

  • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
  • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
