Tufted Hair Grass is one of the few ornamental grasses to thrive in moderate shade, opening up a world of possibilities. It has deep green narrow leaves that form a mounding habit. Lofty clouds of delicate purple flowers rise up to 3 feet tall, swaying in the slightest breeze. This grass turns a tawny gold in late summer. Leave the grass standing over winter to complement frost and snow. It is deer and rabbit resistant for easy meadowscaping. (Deschampsia cespitosa)

USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

  • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
  • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).

Plant Information

Tufted Hair Grass is an excellent choice for adding height and structure to the garden. Happy in part sun/part shade locations in average soil and moderate moisture, Tufted Hair Grass will add a unique and lively element to the garden. A North American native, birds love the seeds. Planted in mass or with other grasses it can create a lovely meadowscape. Plant with ferns and hostas for a unique look. Easy care, just cut old growth to the ground in early spring before new growth emerges. It is a larval food plant for several butterflies in North America including the Umber Skipper.
