White-Tinged Sedge is a lovely North American native species. It features fine, glossy, bright green foliage that makes for a lovely groundcover. In late spring, the wispy arching foliage is topped by upright flower spikes with a rosy-wheat color and a distinct white margin. Naturally found in dry woodlands, this is an attractive solution for dry shade. It will spread by rhizomes to create a soft groundcover beneath trees or tall perennials. It is low-maintenance, adaptable, and resistant to deer and rabbits. (Carex albicans)

USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

  • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
  • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).

Plant Information

White-Tinged Sedge was garden-tested by the Mt. Cuba Center as an attractive lawn alternative for the mid-Atlantic region. It will gently spread over time to create a deer-resistant groundcover or edging. Plant Sedge with native Asters, Columbines, Ferns, and woodland wildflowers like Trilliums for a lush naturalized shade garden.

Eastern North America hosts hundreds of Carex species. Though they resemble grasses, they have identifiable features such as triangular stems that help set them apart. Sedges can be found in natural settings from woodlands to wetlands to sandy dunes, so they are highly adaptable in the garden or meadowscape. They are often mass planted for groundcover, as they are low-maintenance and attractive all year round. Plant in clay, sand, or loam where the soil can be kept moist. Once established, Sedge plants will tolerate average soils and some drought. At most, all they need is an optional late winter or early spring trim. After several years the clumps developed a hollow center, but division will help to keep the plants full. Deer, rabbits, and other herbivores will avoid Sedge.
