USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

  • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
  • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).

Plant Information

Our Bumblebee Burrow Native Plant Collection features native species and native cultivars for a pollinator-friendly, matrix-style planting. Repeat the collection to fill in larger spaces and grow more pollinator habitat. In the winter, queen bumblebees will burrow into bare soil to hibernate; in spring and summer, she’ll build a nest for the next generation of her bumblebee colony – typically in an undisturbed cavity area such as a stone wall or compost pile. To best support bumblebees and other pollinators, leave the leaves and spent flower stalks in your gardens to provide overwintering habitat, and avoid digging or clearing leaf litter until pollinators wake up, when soil temperature warms to over 55°F in spring.

Our Bumblebee Burrow Native Plant Collection includes 7 plants, covering roughly 40 sq. ft. when planted together:

Dwarf Blue Baptisia – 1 plant
Prairie Dropseed Grass – 3 plants
‘Wood's Light Blue’ Aster – 1 plant
‘Mardi Gras’ Helenium – 1 plant
Blunt Mountain Mint – 1 plant

*Not all plants will be in bloom at the same time, as depicted in the collage. Plants are subject to change due to availability, and if we make substitutions, we feature plants with similar attributes suitable to the collection design.
