USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

  • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
  • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).

Plant Information

Our Prairie Habitat Plant Collection offers year-round visual interest with a beautiful mix of native plants. As development across the country has reduced natural prairie habitats, our gardens play an important role in helping these healthy ecosystems rebound. This collection includes butterfly host plants and pollinator-friendly flowers that will attract butterflies and bees. Leaving grasses and flower seed heads standing over the winter will provide habitat for hibernating pollinators and seeds to feed birds.

We included both native plants, and native cultivars, featuring plants with a broad native range that are known to grow well together. Repeat this collection to create a meadow-style planting that can fill a flower bed or replace part of your lawn for a beautiful, habitat-friendly yard.

Our Prairie Habitat Plant Collection includes 6 plants, covering roughly 20 square feet when planted together.

Prairie Blazing Star - 1 plant
Pale Purple Coneflower - 1 plant
'Early Sunrise' Coreopsis - 1 plant
Giant Black Eyed Susan - 1 plant
'Shenandoah Red' Switchgrass - 1 plant
'Prairie Blues' Little Bluestem Grass- 1 plant

*Not all plants will be in bloom at the same time, as depicted on the illustration. Plants are subject to change due to availability. If we make substitutions, we feature plants with similar attributes suitable to the collection design.
