Plant Information

4-6" tall x 16-24" wide, 'Purple Beauty' presents gorgeous blooms that create a majestic statement in the spring garden, spreading quickly and tolerating a variety of soils. A great addition to rock gardens, slope plantings, and steep banks, this creeping phlox prevents erosion and tolerates dry spells. Simply beautiful when planted en masse.

Creeping Phlox is a favorite perennial groundcover in all growing regions. Cold hardy and heat tolerant, it creates a colorful carpet of low-growing, cheerful blooms that appear each spring atop a deep green mat of evergreen foliage. A rapid spreader, Creeping Phlox is masterful at filling spaces in between trees, rolling down gentle slopes or steep banks, and covering areas that are hard to care for with its solid swath of color. Very dependable and tolerant of many soil types. Deer resistant.

Comments about American Meadows Purple Beauty Creeping Phlox:

Houston and other hot humid climates will do well to plant this lovely in the bright shade. I purchased two idividual plants about two years ago, one in the full sun, one in bright shade. the full sun plant only spread to about half the size of the one planted in the bright shade. They both get coffee grounds at semi regular intervals, so treatment is the same. May be great for full sun in the north, but Houston / Zone 9 and up would probably be better in that shade-sun edge zone.

Looked dead when it arrived, smashed up in the box. Has recovered nicely since planting.

      Q & A

      Plant With These:

      USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

      • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
      • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
