Plant Information

4-6" tall x 18" wide. ‘Scarlet Flame’ is a selection of the North American native creeping phlox beloved for dramatic spring blooms. This variety blooms mid- to late-spring and is stunning layered beneath bulbs and other seasonal blooms. The thick carpet of deep green foliage makes an ideal edger or border planting, and works magic in the rock garden. Use it to line garden paths or spill from containers. Quick-growing and dependable, ‘Scarlet Flame’ tolerates a variety of growing conditions and soils. In addition to cold, plants tolerate heat and humidity. Plants perform best when planted so the crown rests just at or slightly above the soil surface. This per-friendly selection will attract butterflies to the spring garden, and resists deer and rabbit browsing. Provide good drainage.

Creeping Phlox is a favorite perennial groundcover in all growing regions. Cold hardy and heat tolerant, it creates a colorful carpet of low-growing, cheerful blooms that appear each spring atop a deep green mat of evergreen foliage. A rapid spreader, Creeping Phlox is masterful at filling spaces in between trees, rolling down gentle slopes or steep banks, and covering areas that are hard to care for with its solid swath of color. Very dependable and tolerant of many soil types. Deer resistant.

Comments about American Meadows Scarlet Flame Creeping Phlox:

The plants were extremely small and fragile upon receipt. Blooms pink, not red which is a disappointment. I have a red monochromatic garden, thus pink is not acceptable. Phlox can be a bit of a challenge to establish by my experience. At least 50% of the plants I used in raised beds, full sun, have not survived. The ones that did are extremely slow growing (to be expected) and have produced very few blooms. The purpose for this plant selection was to eventually grow the phlox to cascade over the sides of the beds for added interest and contrast to other plants contained therein. This will be a timely process. Will order replacement/supplemental phlox in the Spring of 2017 so as to support my original design.

    Q & A

    Plant With These:

    USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

    • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
    • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
