Our Carefree Creeping Phlox Collection offers a beautiful quilt-like groundcover to dress up the early spring garden. Cushiony mats of fine-textured foliage burst into bloom, blanketing the garden in star-shaped flowers and attracting pollinators. Lovely planted along a walkway, tucked among the boulders of a rock garden, or cascading over a rock wall or the edge of a planter. Choose from a Collection of 4 or 12 plants.

USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

  • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
  • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).

Plant Information

(2-6" tall x 12-24" wide) Herald spring with the beauty of our Carefree Creeping Phlox Collection. In early spring, the dense mats of fine-textured bright green foliage burst into glorious bloom, with the foliage barely visible beneath the blanket of star-shaped flowers. Blooming for several weeks each spring, just when we're shaking off our winter coats, Creeping Phlox are carefree, hardy groundcovers that spread without becoming invasive. They're also an important early source of nectar for pollinators. 'Scarlet Flame' has magenta-pink blooms. 'Emerald Blue' has pale blue-violet blooms. 'Purple Beauty' has bright purple petals accented deep violet centers. And the flowers of 'Amazing Grace' are white with a delightful magenta eye. Perfect for complementing taller perennials such as Bearded Iris, Siberian Iris, or Garden Phlox, and a lovely pairing with taller spring-blooming bulbs such as Daffodils and Tulips. Deer resistant and drought tolerant once mature. Hardy in zones 2-9.

Our Carefree Creeping Phlox Collection of 4 plants (one of each) is roughly 4' x 4' if planted together (though they will naturalize and spread over time), The Collection of 12 plants (3 of each) is roughly 8' x 5'' if planted together (though they will naturalize and spread over time). The Collections contain the following plants:

'Purple Beauty' Creeping Phlox

'Emerald Blue' Creeping Phlox

'Scarlet Flame' Creeping Phlox

'Amazing Grace' Creeping Phlox
