Enjoy the sweet scents of spring with ‘May Breeze’ Woodland Phlox. This native cultivar features abundant, fragrant white flowers in mid-to-late spring. The petals may show a pale purple blush as they age. Butterflies and hummingbirds love the early-season flowers. These will spread gently, creating a carpet of flowers and semi-evergreen foliage for part-shade gardens. They are drought tolerant once established, and deer resistant too. (Phlox divaricata ‘May Breeze’)
To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low
temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.
If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will
survive the winter temperatures in your area.
If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack
of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
May Breeze Woodland Phlox heralds spring with sweetly fragrant bright white flowers. As the flowers age, they are sometimes washed with light lavender or blue, giving them a lustrous glow. This compact perennial is a perfect groundcover for spring-blooming bulbs. It will fill in spaces in the garden where late-sprouting perennials take their time to emerge. When flowering is done, the lance-shaped deep green foliage will maintain an attractive texture. Woodland Phlox will spread over time, creating a lovely floral carpet. Native to Eastern North America, it prefers part shade with moist, well-drained soil. Once established it is quite drought-tolerant and deer-resistant. Cut back after the first bloom to encourage a second bloom, and will discourage pests such as spider mites or powdery mildew. This perennial is an introduction from famed Netherlands plantsman Piet Oudolf.
