USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

  • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
  • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).

Plant Information
(10-12" tall x 12-15" wide) Loved by bees, hummingbirds, and pollinators, 'Balmy™ Purple' Bee Balm blooms from late spring to mid-summer, dazzling all with its signature shaggy-topped flowers in vibrant magenta-purple. This dwarf variety has a more compact size and shape than its cousins, while boasting the same large flowers that resemble a burst of fireworks.  In contrast to most Bee Balms, 'Balmy™ Purple' Bee Balm can command center stage all season long thanks to its resistance to powdery mildew, a foliar disease that discolors the leaves of many other Bee Balm (Monarda) varieties. A dwarf variety, this Bee Balm fits in nicely with mixed plantings, and will readily naturalize to form a beautiful swath of color. Cut plenty of the fragrant blooms to add color and fragrance to bouquets — cutting stems and deadheading both encourage repeat bloom. Plant in full sun to part shade and average to moist soil.  Adaptable and easy to grow, it is resistant to deer and rabbits and is hardy in zones 4-9.
