'Early Amethyst' Beautyberry, with its bright purple berries and brilliant yellow fall color, is a spectacular specimen for the autumn garden. Its manageable size, ease of care, and lush summer leaf canopy make it a favorite shrub for gardeners. Birds are drawn to the berries, which ripen well before those of other beautyberry varieties. (Callicarpa)
To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low
temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.
If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will
survive the winter temperatures in your area.
If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack
of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
3-4 ' tall x 4-5' wide. Callicarpa dichotoma ‘Early Amethyst’ is a notable selection of beautyberry for its bright purple berries that ripen in September, a full month before most others reach peak fall interest. While the species can grow to be quite large, ‘Early Amethyst’ fits nicely in a perennial or mixed border as a backdrop or specimen plant. Grows best in full sun to partial shade. Late winter pruning keeps plants in check and promotes compact growth. Hardy in zones 5-8. Can die back to the ground during harsh winters in cold areas, but will re-flush, bloom, and fruit the following summer. For the best fruiting display, plant in multiples to cross-pollinate each other.
