USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

  • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
  • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).

Plant Information
36-48” tall x 36-48” wide. Grown primarily for stunning winter color, Arctic Fire® Cornus also provides interest through the growing season. Small and fragrant white flowers appear in late spring, attracting butterflies to the garden. Clusters of white to blue-tinged fruits follow blossoms and attract foraging birds. Arctic Fire® is gorgeous massed against white-barked trees or in open areas where the red twigs shine against snow banks in the winter sunlight. In areas lacking regular snow cover, plant against a backdrop of evergreen foliage for contrast. Young stems display the best red color. Maintain colorful shrubs by removing one-third of the oldest stems each year in early spring. Older stems will have corky bark and a brownish coloration. Plants thrive in average to moist soils and tolerate bog-like conditions and clay soils. Plants do not spread by stolon like other dogwoods. A deer-resistant, native selection.
