USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

  • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
  • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).

Plant Information

(24-96" tall x 18-72" wide) When it's time to start or expand your pollinator garden, our Pollinator Meadow Native Plant Collection makes it easy! The plants' long bloom periods overlap, guaranteeing a continual symphony of pink, purple, and white flowers and an abundant supply of nectar. In spring, the Swamp Milkweed's foliage feeds Monarch butterfly larvae, and the summer flowers provide nectar for a wide array of pollinators. In mid summer, Common Milkweed takes center stage with clusters of flowers resembling puffy pink clouds. Summer brings intriguing, fragrant Bee Balm flowers that are irresistible to bees, hummingbirds, and butterflies. For the finale, Joe Pye Weed and Purple Aster provide essential nectar sources from late summer into fall. These deer-resistant, native plants also make lovely and fragrant cut flowers. Plant in full sun and average to moist soil.

Our Pollinator Meadow Native Plant Collection is roughly 17' x 10' if planted together and contains 11 plants:

Ice Ballet Swamp Milkweed - 1 plant

Purple Aster - 1 plant

Common Milkweed- 3 plants

Wild Bergamot (Bee Balm) - 3 plants

Joe Pye Weed - 3 plants

*Not all plants will be in bloom at the same time, as depicted on the illustration. Plants are subject to change due to availability. If we make substitutions, we feature plants with similar attributes suitable to the garden/collection design.
