Purple Miscanthus Grass, or Maiden Grass, has graceful compact form highlighted by a kaleidoscope of color. Foliage emerges green, with red accents that deepen throughout summer, topped by silver-pink plumes in late summer. Fall brings a fiery orange-red color to foliage, turning burgundy by winter, which gives contrast to the plumes that turn to an icy white as seeds develop. Fluffy white seed heads and burgundy color endure through winter for year-round interest. (Miscanthus sinensis)

USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

  • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
  • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).

Plant Information

36-48" tall x 24-36"‘ wide. Purple Miscanthus Grass grows as a compact, upright clump with long, flowing blades. Fine texture and lasting color provide a focal point for beds and containers. Plant solo as an accent or specimen, or plant in masses in borders, cottage-style gardens, and meadows. Plants perform best in full sun, but tolerate light shade, where they will have a looser structure and decreased flowering. Miscanthus Grass grows in a range of soils, including sand and clay - it prefers moist soils but can withstand drought and dry soils. A good selection for managing erosion and planting near walnut trees. The silky plumes are used cut or dried in flower arrangements, and attract birds to the garden. Leave foliage standing over winter, for habitat, visual interest, and to protect the plant crown. Cut back in late winter or spring before new growth emerges.
