USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

  • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
  • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).

Plant Information

The Drought Tolerant Garden includes 25 vibrant, eye-catching plants that thrive with less water. Like all young plants, these perennials will still need your care in their first few seasons, but will become quite self-sufficient as they mature, even with inconsistent or below-average rainfall. Mature plants will fill 98 square feet of planting space.

Our Drought Tolerant Pre-Planned Garden is roughly 14' x 7' and includes care instructions, a planting map and 25 plants:

'Morning Light' Miscanthus - 1 plant
Russian Sage - 3 plants
Echinacea Mix - Bag of 3 bare roots
'Early Sunrise' Coreopsis - 3 plants
'Little Business' Reblooming Daylily - Bag of 3 bare roots
'Autumn Joy' Sedum - 3 plants
'Munstead' Lavender - 3 plants
'Goblin' Gaillardia - 3 plants
'Purple Beauty' Creeping Phlox - 3 plants

*Not all plants will be in bloom at the same time, as depicted on the illustration. Illustration is an artistic rendition and not an exact image. Plants are subject to change due to availability. If we make substitutions, we feature plants with similar attributes suitable to the garden design.
