USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

  • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
  • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).

Plant Information

Forsythia is an easy to grow shrub that boast an abundance of golden yellow blooms in early spring. Once the blooms are finished the branches will produce rich green leaves that cover the shrub. While Forsythia is beautiful, it’s essential to give it a trim every season. Preferably after it blooms and or when it starts to lose its shape. It grows very fast and can become large when given the right growing conditions. It prefers full sun, well-draining soil and some moisture. If you receive less than 2 inches of rain a week, it’s recommended to water it weekly. Because of its vigorous growth its makes an excellent shrub for privacy or as a hedge.
