Gorgeous, double blooms of Lenten Rose create a splash of vibrant color in the early spring garden and the rich, dark green foliage lasts for most of the season. This heat-tolerant perennial thrives in partial to full shade and becomes a true conversation starter in any garden. Growing to be about 16-18” tall, we recommend planting this beauty in groups of three. It looks amazing blooming with Peonies, Daffodils, and other spring-bloomers in the garden. Be sure to plant extra for spring bouquets!
To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low
temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.
If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will
survive the winter temperatures in your area.
If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack
of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
These spectacular little plants become more popular every year, and no wonder. They thrive in shade, are perfectly hardy, and have lovely flowers in endless colors and color combinations. The 2-3 flowers begin blooming in late winter or very early spring.
Hellebores demand good humusy soil and partial or full shade, much like many of our woodland wildflowers. Lots of gardeners use them in pots on shady patios. The plants usually stay around a foot in height, and the stunning flowers often last for months, so be sure to site them where you'll enjoy the bloom.
These are evergreen plants in warmer climates, so if you live in a heavy winter area, you may want to pot your Lenten Roses and bring them into a protected place during the coldest months.
You may have also heard of the Christmas Rose. Its another species of Hellebore, and blooms during the winter.
