Cherokee Sunset Black-Eyed Susan (Rudbeckia) casts an autumn glow across the garden with large double and semi-double blooms burning in radiant yellow, orange, and copper hues. A dark mahogany center and chocolate brown eye accent the warm tones. Sturdy, upright stems and bright green foliage resist deer and rabbit browsing. An award-winning beauty for season-long color. USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

  • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
  • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).

Plant Information
18-30” tall x 12-16” wide. Bees and butterflies adore the nectar-rich blooms of Cherokee Sunset Black-Eyed Susan (Rudbeckia hirta), while gardeners delight in how easy this plant is to grow. Drought and salt-tolerant, Cherokee Sunset makes gardening a breeze in even the most challenging landscapes. Plant in any well-drained soil for weeks of color. Plants bloom best when given ample moisture. Rudbeckia are mainstays of the prairie landscape and pair naturally with native grasses and perennials. Try naturalizing in meadows and prairies plantings, or plant as a focal point in containers. Cherokee Sunset also makes a lovely cut flower and the seed heads are used in dried arrangements. Plants benefit from deadheading to prolong flowering. Reinforce the stand by allowing some flowers to develop seed for self-sowing.
