Planted four plants this spring and all four have brilliant cobalt blue blossoms. The plants have not experienced a Wisconsin winter yet so hopefully the zone 4 rating is correct. The blue color gets a lot of compliments so if they make it through the winter I plan to get more and plant them throughout the flower gardens.

I bought three of these plants for me [Maryland] and three for a friend in Chicago. Her plants did well as evidenced by a picture she sent me. Mine did not. I planted in new supplemented soil, watered during a dry hot summer and mine withered. Perhaps Maryland is getting too hot for some plants.

      Disappointment

Comments about American Meadows True Blue Gentian:

This is season #2 for this plant, and I had high hopes that it would have settled in and grow like the picture here, adding a nice shot of blue in the color scheme. It comes out green in the spring, then the leaves yellow and it dwindles to nothing without a single bloom. It's no bigger than when I purchased it. Very disappointed and cannot recommend.

Comments about American Meadows True Blue Gentian:

Ordered 3 plants. All were tiny upon receipt. One died shortly after planting and the other two hung on through the summer with little above ground growth evident. I am curious to see if any come back this spring.

Comments about American Meadows True Blue Gentian:

I planted three of these plants in containers with new potting soil and according to the directions. I watered them as indicated and yet two of three died and the one who survived had one blue flower. That single bloom was beautiful but it was a lot to pay and a lot of effort for even so small, albeit beautiful, a return.

It is not often the photo matches the flower. Most photos are saturated with color and causes disappointment after the flowers appear. This flower by the late summer matched the photo. It is supposed to get taller. Looks great with Tiki Torch Coneflower. I am getting more this year.

                        Q & A

                        Plant With These:

                        USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

                        • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
                        • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
