Plant Information

Rising 2-3 ft. tall, 'Baby Joe' Dwarf Joe Pye Weed blooms with big hydrangea-like lavender blooms on the top of every stem in late summer and fall.

You see Joe Pye Weed over most of the east in roadside ditches, since it seeks sunny wet spots. It usually blooms with the goldenrods. There are now several hybrids offered for perennial gardens, but most wild gardeners think the wild version is best.

I have had this for 3 years now. Finally figured out that the "mint" I was ripping out by the hand full was actually this plant that seems to get a late start. I have it next to spiderwort that starts early and that I cut down just in time for Joe Pye to go nuts. Several people have stopped to ask me what it was since it almost glows when everything else is dead.

mine died almost immediately

The seedling arrived looking a bit pale and wilted. After a proper hardening off period, I planted it in optimal conditions. It died within 4 days.

Very disappointing!

Comments about American Meadows Baby Joe Dwarf Pye Weed:

I ordered this in the spring, it came as just a root ball, did not come up but died in the ground. I ordered a replacement and it came half the size pot, was not packaged correctly and all the dirt fell out of the pot and the plant was wilted. I now have the plant soaking in wet soil to hopefully make it perk back up. Very dissatisfied.

            Q & A

            Plant With These:

            USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

            • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
            • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
