Purple Prairie Clover is a beautiful yet rugged perennial for dry, sunny pollinator gardens, giving long-lasting color and airy texture. On tall wiry stems, purple blooms open in rings around dense cone-shaped heads, while narrow leaflets add fine texture to the garden. Purple Prairie Clover flowers attract a variety of native bees, butterflies, and beneficial insects. This drought-tolerant native wildflower is perfect for naturalized plantings, rock gardens, or enhancing soils in native plantings. (Dalea purpurea)
To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low
temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.
If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will
survive the winter temperatures in your area.
If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack
of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
Purple Prairie Clover is a must-have pollinator plant that fixes nitrogen in the soil and is an important component of prairie restoration. Its native range includes prairie habitats east of the Rocky Mountains, from southern Canada to Texas and Georgia. Plant in average to dry, well-drained soils in full sun in hardiness zones 3-8. Plants produce unbranched stems two feet tall or more, with erect, wiry stems holding blooms aloft. Established plants send up multiple stems from the base, giving a bushy appearance. In addition to native bees, plants attract a variety of beneficial insects, including syrphid flies and bee flies. Purple Prairie Clover serves as a host plant to caterpillars of the Dogface Sulphur Butterfly and Reakirt's Blue Butterflies.
