USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

  • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
  • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).

Plant Information
(48-72" tall, 18-24" wide) Stately and stunning Queen of the Prairie forms upright mounds of attractive, deeply cut foliage. From early summer to midsummer, her majesty steals the show with 4-6 foot tall flower stems topped with clusters of tiny pink flowers. Individual flowers start out as tiny round buds, and then open to pretty little blossoms with extra-long long stamens, and flower sprays resemble fluffy pink clouds. all the while creating a flurry of pollinator activity. Be sure to cut a few stems to bring drama and fragrance to flower arrangements. Plant this vigorous, low-maintenance perennial in full sun to part shade and moist soil, in a spot where it can freely spread. A beautiful option for meadow style planting and easily filling garden beds. Native to the northeast and midwest of the US and Canada, it thrives in  all but the hottest, driest regions. Deer-resistant.
