With its large size and fine texture, Tall Meadow Rue is a great deer-resistant native perennial for naturalizing in wildflower gardens, meadows, and open woodland gardens. Purple stems hold fern-like foliage and sprays of white flowers that open in late spring to early summer, attracting native bees. Tall Meadow Rue thrives in moist, loamy soils in full sun to part shade. This towering beauty works well at the back of borders or meadows, or planted along a fence or building, and looks particularly impactful when mass planted. (Thalictrum dasycarpum)

USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

  • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
  • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).

Plant Information
Tall Meadow Rue adds airy height and fine texture to the garden with lacy fern-like foliage and delicate fringed blooms. Ideal for rain gardens, Thalictrum dasycarpum is native to wet meadows and prairies, stream banks, and damp thickets throughout southern Canada and the central United States, from Arizona to Alabama and northward. It performs best in in zones 4 to 7, and in sunnier spots it will require more water than in shade. Plants do not tolerate high heat or humidity, and benefit from afternoon shade in warmer regions of its range. Plants are dioecious, with male and female flowers on separate plants; flowers of both sexes are petal-less but produce 4 to 6 white sepals. Male flowers are quite showy, with twelve or more yellow-tipped stamens that dangle on long white filaments, while female flowers produce white, thread-like pistils that look like petals. Flowers are wind pollinated and attract a variety of native bees that feed on the pollen of male flowers.
