A close relative to Lily of the Valley, Solomon's Seal is a native plant with delicate, bell-shaped flowers that drip gracefully from arching 18" stems. Set against broad green leaves, the tiny flowers seem to glow each evening at dusk and emit a sweet fragrance. Most at home in moist, rich soils, this woodland plant will excel in any shady spot as long as you amend the planitng site with compost and mulch the whole area to help retain moisture. Will spread and naturalize, slowly but surely. (Polygonatum multiflorum)

Plant Information

The Solomon Seals make up an important group of North American woodland plants, and there are several types. This is the main species, with elegantly arching single stems which bloom in pairs of yellowish/white/greenish bell-like flowers all along the leafy stems. The common name comes from the fact that the root of this species bears a mark which some think resembles the Star of David, or the "Seal of King Solomon." False Solomon's seal, a similar-leaved species has completely different flowers. Both are great additions to any wild garden, providing lush greenery, lovely bloom, and then striking berries to the spring flower show.

Comments about American Meadows Solomon's Seal:

They came in the mail about a month ago and they were three very different sizes. The large one even had a fruiting body on it but the minute it broke the surface of the soil my cat ate it. Hopefully the other two will sprout soon to replace it.

Comments about American Meadows Solomon's Seal:

I love this plant! It multiplies when established but does not spread. Has beautiful, delicate flowers that look like bells with a green ruffle around the bottom of the flower. I have shared this plant with many friends and they love it also. I also have a variegated leaf one that is just as wonderful. I just moved from my home of 30 years but this is the first plant of all my plants that I moved right away.

Comments about American Meadows Solomon's Seal:

I bought a slip of this at a "yard" sale. The lady was moving and wanted homes for all her many plants. Anyway, I planted it in my shade garden and it just took off. It has multiplied very nicely and always full of flowers during the blooming season. I have since divided my plants and have planted them along my wrought iron fence and it is just gorgeous. I sit and have my morning coffee looking at this beautiful plant. Rich green in color and it is loaded with the delicate little flowers that look like cream colored bells trimmed in green. They are a multiplying plant but not an intrusive plant. Give it a try. You must always take some extra attention to any plant during the planting time, but once it is established, it will give you many years of pleasure.

Planted in pots so I could keep track of it. It did not sprout at all for months. In the fall 1 of the 3 started to sprout but then winter arrived.

Wanted a good fragrant shade grown plant. One of 3 plants came up. Never got any flowers. The one plant that came up is not there. Hoping next year the 3 bulbs produce nice plants. This year a bust.

Comments about American Meadows Solomon's Seal:

I planned two shade gardens and bought my plants all from American meadows for one. The garden had montgomery astilbe, lady fern, a hybrid lobelia (which was not a good choice) and this solomon's seal. In spite of the smallness of the root, the plant took well in spring and produced little flowers.

As an added surprise, the plants took on a ghostly pale gold fall color. They're in shade behind a shed and get ample moisture from runoff. They get a bit of morning sun.

This year the plants have THREE stems, and the same lovely two-toned flowers. I suppose these may be more fragrant once the plants get bigger.

                Q & A

                Plant With These:

                USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

                • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
                • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
