USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

  • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
  • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).

Plant Information

(28-34" tall x 36" wide) Russian Sage (Perovskia) has long been a favorite for Mediterranean and cottage style gardens, but its large habit makes it a challenge for gardeners in smaller spaces. 'Blue Jean Baby' Russian Sage PP#29281 gives gardeners a chance to enjoy the scents and lilac-blue spikes of this versatile perennial – without it taking over the garden. When fully established, 'Blue Jean Baby' resembles a low woody shrub in the landscape that dies back to the ground in winter. Gray-green foliage reminiscent of olive groves and Mediterranean gardens sets off the profusion of tubular flowers in mid-summer. Grow 'Blue Jean Baby' as a low hedge, or against the outside of a fence, or mix it into your border plantings in a site that gets full sun and does not hold moisture for too long. Protection from high wind is preferred. 'Blue Jean Baby' Perovskia is a drought-tolerant plant once established it can cope with average soils of low fertility. It responds very well to shearing to promote re-bloom, but you won't have to worry about deer doing the shearing – it's not one of their favorite foods!
