USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

  • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
  • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).

Plant Information
36-48" tall x 12-24" wide. Prairie Milkweed (Asclepias sullivanti) is a native perennial with big personality, making a striking addition to butterfly gardens and is perfect for naturalizing in meadows. Large, smooth leaves stand upright and boast a prominent pink midrib, accenting the gorgeous pink blooms. Once common in tallgrass prairies, the bold foliage looks striking against thin blades of ornamental grasses. Prairie Milkweed is a host plant for monarch caterpillars and an excellent nectar source for adult monarchs. Plants resist deer browsing and tolerate a wide range of soil conditions. Give them plenty of sunshine in a well-selected planting location. Prairie Milkweed produces a deep taproot over time, helping the plant tolerate periods of drought, but making plants difficult to move. Plants can spread by rhizome, but are much less aggressive than common milkweed. Collect seed pods to prevent self-sowing.
