Comments about American Meadows Shade Loving Pre-Planned Garden - Small:

The hostas grew for about 2 months, then disappeared. No evidence of deer foraging. Nothing returned this year.

Dead nettle: looked nice, for about 2 months, then disappeared. Seemed to suddenly shrivel up and die after initial growth. Nothing returned this year.

Violets. Again, bloomed and disappeared. I still have the tags near each plant, but nothing is coming up this year.

Astilbe, struggled to get going and then disappeared.Minimal bloom. Did not return this spring.

Bleeding hearts. Looks like they might return. Other bleeding hearts from a purchase elsewhere are up, but not these.

All were planted in full shade, well drained slope. Amended soil of compost, peat moss and vermiculite.

I'll be switching to ferns and caladium for this year from another vendor.

Comments about American Meadows Shade Loving Pre-Planned Garden - Small:

I planted the shade garden in a small shaded area (of course!) in my yard. I figured it would take a couple of years to fill in but couldn't believe how quickly the plants took off--even after not being able to plant them immediately. Unfortunately, I didn't have a true 10x4' area (mine is 9x3.5') so they are sort of squished together, but regardless, I couldn't have been happier with how it turned out. My neighbor comments on it every time she walks by.

Comments about American Meadows Shade Loving Pre-Planned Garden - Small:

This was simple to plant with the enclosed 'floor plan'. It is slow growing, but that is to be expected with shade plants. I expect it to be glorious next summer!

    Q & A

    Plant With These:

    USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

    • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
    • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
