Growing Callas: Callas are native to South Africa, and today they're not only easy to grow, but available in a literal rainbow of colors. Their fluted blooms and refined foliage make them a favorite for floral arrangements, but they also lend a sense of elegance to the landscape. Callas do best when sited in dappled or bright, yet indirect sunlight.
The common white one* is Zantedeschia aethiopica, and like all callas, it's hardy in the US only in Zones 8 through 10. This makes callas 'tender bulbs' in most of the country, and they'll have to be lifted out of the ground and stored indoors come fall. Zantedeschia aethiopica prefers moist soil and can even thrive when sited along stream banks and water features. Many people grow callas in patio pots, which can be brought in before frost arrives.
Most of the very colorful callas are a separate species, C. rehmannii, and these have more narrow leaves than the classic white type. If you haven't grown callas, you may be surprised that these bulbs create a sizable plant. Sometimes the clumps grow 36' high. Most all callas have pointed or heart-shaped foliage that's dark green, spattered with white spots. The bulbs are irregular, sort of like ginger roots, and several can be planted in the same pot. They enjoy being root-bound. If you plant your bulbs in spring, you'll have flowers in about 70-112 days.

"The bulbs were good sized upon arrival. I planted them in clay pots in May after freezing wasn't an issue. One yellow lily emerged rather quickly, it was very pretty, but the lilies from that bulb wilted and rotted and the bulb turned to mush. The rest of the lilies came in fine . . . . very beautiful colors, but another lily (different color) rotted. And I wasn't over watering the plants. The 3 bulbs in the other clay pot are fine. I was disappointed because I really liked the colors. The"
"I was sent something completely different, I was expecting multi colored calla lillies, instead only one color, dsrk purple, and only 4 flowers bloomed. Very low count of blooms"
"Love these flowers. Was so excited about the colors and how long the flowers lasted. Can't wait till next year to see them come up again!"
"I pot my callas, mainly because it's so easy to bring them inside when winter beckons. I leave them in the pots, put them in the basement. Every other year I take them out of the pots and store them in cardboard boxes. That's it, easy peasy, repot in the spring. Also, now that my old trees were removed, potting lets me move them to the porch during blistering hot days of Midwest sun, during those 90+ degree spells. I bought these same bulbs two years ago, and was surprised to find the colors were much brighter in reality. Just striking - so much so I wanted more of them. So I ordered last year, along with two other kinds as gifts. Every bulb I've received from American Meadows has been healthy, prolific bloomers, and fill in lushly for a beautiful potted plant. My pictures were taken early on, and the plants aren't as full as they were a few weeks later. Nonstop blooms for a long time. When they aren't blooming, they still make a great-looking plant."
"Planted them along the south side of house"
"Tequila sunrise is a great description. They flowers were strong and beautiful. They lasted for weeks!"
"They are very pretty, and I wish I had ordered more. I did realize that at least 2 bulbs should be planted fairly close together to get the full beauty effect."
"Cut and used in vase on dining room table. Lasted for weeks. Wasn't intending to cut but did when flower fell over from weight."
"The calla lily is a beautiful flower but this variety has spectacuar and unusual color. Love it"
