Description
More compact than most amsonias, Blue Ice also boasts larger flowers in a deeper color than other varieties. The star-shaped, dark lavender-blue flowers are about 3/4" across and appear in late spring or early summer. The leaves are relatively broad, resembling willow leaves. At just 12 to 16" high, Blue Ice combines well with other perennials without overwhelming them, and the shorter stems are less prone to flopping than taller varieties.
Amsonias form upright mounds of feathery foliage, topped in spring by delicate blue blossoms. They're easy to grow, preferring full sun to part shade and moist, rich soil. The feathery foliage of taller varieties make a pretty backdrop for other perennials, and the leaves turns a brilliant yellow in fall.
