Description
Allan Armitage, renowned horticulturist and author, named 'Briggadoon' St. John's Wort as "one of the finest groundcovers available," and we couldn't agree more. With its low growing habit and brilliant golden-green foliage, 'Briggadoon' is stunning as a groundcover when planted en masse, or used singly anywhere a pop of bright color is needed. The sunny yellow blooms in summer, and the glowing copper foliage in fall are simply the icing on the cake!
This cultivar of St. John's Wort is a selection of Hypericum calycinum, native to Europe, North Africa, and western Asia. Although it thrives in sandy soils in full sun, 'Briggadoon' will tolerate a wide range of soils as long as they are well-draining. It tolerates part shade as well, although it might not bloom quite as much. Deep roots and spreading rhizomes make this a great hardworking groundcover for preventing erosion.
Not recommended for very humid climates, as root rot can be a concern.
