The Central USA Plains Ecoregion (Ecoregion 8.2) is an EPA Level II Ecoregion. This ecoregion includes large portions of Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, and Wisconsin. Large cities within the ecoregion include Chicago, IL; Detroit, MI; and Indianapolis, IN; Columbus OH; and Milwaukee, WI. This ecoregion is distinguished by its temperate climate, with landscapes featuring flat plains, gently rolling hills, and a mosaic of deciduous and mixed forests.

In terms of the plant world, keystone plants are native plants that provide essential food and shelter to support habitat for wildlife, such as birds, pollinators, and beneficial insects.
