Like Barbara Mitchell, this one is always in the top 5 or so in the big national popularity poll at the American Hemerocallis Society, the biggest award a Daylily can receive.
About Daylilies, the most popular perennials: It all started with the original wild orange Daylily. Many Americans think the tough old orange Daylily they see in old gardens and along roadsides is a wildflower, but it really isn't. No Daylily is native to North America; most hail from Asia.
Don't confuse them with the true lilies: Daylilies are not really lilies. In fact, they are quite different. As you know, true lilies grow on tall stems with flowers at the top. Daylily flower stems (called scapes) are generally much shorter, and grow from a fountain of grass-like foliage at ground level. Daylilies are members of the genus, Hemerocallis, not Lilium, which is the genus name of true lilies.
Daylily Roots, not bulbs As all good gardeners know, Daylilies don't grow from bulbs like true lilies. Daylilies form a mass of thickened, fleshy roots. These unique root systems hold so much moisture and nutrients, the plants can survive out of the ground for weeks. This survival system, making them tough, and really easy to handle, is one of the reasons they're so popular today. They're also dependably hardy, so once you have them, you have them for years.
Types of Daylilies for today's gardens: The famous old orange Daylily and the well-known old Lemon Lily are not the only wild Daylilies, just the most famous. There are 20 Daylily species, worldwide. Today from those 20 plants, more than 20,000 hybrids have been created, to satisfy gardeners who love Daylilies, and just cant get enough. Hybridizing Daylilies for various colors and styles is not new. Famous old reliable hybrids like Catherine Woodbury--the lovely lavender and yellow bi-color--have been around for decades.
The re-bloomers for twice the bloom. Today's craze for re-blooming Daylilies all began with Stella D'Oro, the now-famous yellow dwarf Daylily that blooms once during late spring (the regular Daylily blooming season), and then again in late August and into fall. Today, there are hundreds of re-bloomers, from dwarfs to full-size beauties.
The latest and greatest: In any group of highly popular hybrids, there is always something newer and better. Some real break-through successes of new types for their times are Daylilies like Victoria's Secret and Big Smile, with elaborately ruffled petals and clear contrasts of magnificent colors.
As soon as your order is placed you will receive a confirmation email. You will receive a second email the day your order ships telling you how it has been sent. "I bought 12 of these Strawberry Candy reblooming daylilies to be a border at the curb of our front yard. I thought they would make a cheery and colorful front to our part lawn and part wooded yard. The ones that came up were much paler and a big disappointment, looking washed out and not cheerful. A couple of other varieties with yellow showed up here and there when they bloomed. (We had no idea, of course, because the bags were labelled as "Strawberry Candy," and the plants come bare-rooted before blooming. ) Either they were mutants, or the quality control and packaging wasn't done well. Very disappointing, and we feel cheated."
"This came up easily the first year, lillies are easy to care for and plant. I have a huge row of them but some were destroyed last year during some sprinkler work so I got this to go in the mix. I expected this to be pink from the name and web pics, but it is really more peach/orange, so buyer beware. Otherwise, she's cute."
"I was disappointed that several didn't seem to make it once in the ground. Others are doing fine. They're in a border."
"Very beautiful I bought 3 only one has bloomed so far. I thought the color was going to be more pink but they are more orange."
"I have several types and these bloom longer and more abundantly than any others. They also multiply rapidly."
"I truly enjoy this plant. The bloomed flower is so large, and it's almost a size of regular Asiatic Lily! I can't believe this plant is indeed a daylily-kind. Very large blooms! The color name "Strawberry Candy" very well describes this flower in my opinion. So yummy looking, and I almost wanted to kiss the flower :) It took almost 8 weeks after planting, and only one bloomed so far (other two doesn't show flower buds yet, only leaves), but I am happy with it as this is their 1st year, so maybe next year I will see all bloom. The only drawback was since this is a daylily, bloom life of the flowers is short. The 1st day of a bloom is spectacular that you don't want to miss (take a picture!), and the 2nd day the already-bloomed-flower gets flimsy a bit, but usually they bloom other buds one after another so the 2nd day bloom can blend in with others making it less visible. Overall, very attractive flower. I am going to explore other daylilies for a next year order to find a true beauty like this one!!"
"This is a beautiful flower however my only dissapointment is it does not reflower like the stella dora does. I only get 1 bloom time per year."
"Surprisingly, one of the three plants flowered this first year. I was a little disappointed as the coloring was very washed out compared to the picture. This may be due to my soil chemistry, though. They are growing, but slowly. Hopefully we'll get some nice flowers next year."
"Although I have not a a chance to plant them as I just received them today, May 29,2015, they came very carefully packed and protected. I have delt with American Meadow's before and I am very pleased with their packing of plant's plus the quality of their plants. This is why I am still ordering from them this year. Their prices are very reasonable and the products beyond and above expectation. I recommend ordering from American Meadows."
"Have an area near my garage and tried a variety of annuals. Planted these as recommended and now 3 yrs later they are very full and lots of flowers."
