Overview
With a versatile compact form and bold color, ‘Summer Sun’ Heliopsis blooms abundantly from summer through early fall. Butterflies and native bees adore the double daisy-like blooms with sunny yellow ray petals and a red-orange center, and birds love the seed heads. Flowers are produced on sturdy stems, excellent for cutting, while coarse dark purple-green foliage provides a contrast to sunny blooms. This long-blooming, drought-tolerant perennial is a native cultivar selected for its compact habit and heat tolerance. (Heliopsis helianthoides)

Description

‘Summer Sun’ Heliopsis, also called False Sunflower, is a selection of native Heliopsis found in the central and south-central United States and southern Canada. ‘Summer Sun’ is more compact than the species, maturing at 2-3 feet tall, and with its sturdy upright habit, there is no staking required. The variety is known for its heat tolerance, making it an excellent selection for southern gardens. Heliopsis is quite drought-tolerant and adaptable to clay or rocky soils. Ideal growing conditions include dry to medium, well-drained soil in full sun. Plants can tolerate light shade, but may become lanky and require support. Deadhead spent flowers regularly to extend the blooming season, or leave spent flowers standing to provide seeds for songbirds.
