The Mixed Wood Plains Ecoregion (Ecoregion 8.1) is an EPA Level II Ecoregion. This ecoregion crosses the northeastern and upper midwestern United States, including portions of Connecticut, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Vermont, Wisconsin, and all of Rhode Island. Large cities within the ecoregion include New York City, Boston, MA; Buffalo, NY; and Cleveland, OH. This ecoregion is distinguished by its temperate climate, with landscapes featuring flat plains, gently rolling hills, and a mosaic of deciduous and mixed forests.
