Description
(6-8 feet tall x 6-8 feet wide) Southern Gentleman Winterberry is best planted alongside the female Winter Red Winterberry to provide the pollen it needs to fertilizer its flowers, which then develop into brilliant red berries. (Winterberries are dioecious, meaning they have separate male and female plants.) Southern Gentlemen are attractive shrubs with glossy green foliage and inconspicuous flowers, but they do not produce berries. Plant at least one male for up to 6-10 female plants, in close proximity to ensure good pollination. Native to swampy areas of the Northeast, Winterberry shrubs area easily grown in average, acidic, medium to wet soils in full sun to part shade. Adaptable to both light and clay soils, but prefers moist, acidic, organic loams. Good tolerance for poorly drained soils including wet boggy or swampy conditions.
