Description
(5-12 feet tall x 5-12 feet wide) Winterthur Smooth Viburnum is a native deciduous shrub that offers multi-season interest. An introduction of Winterthur Gardens in Delaware, it won the prestigious Pennsylvania Horticultural Society Gold Medal in 1991. This versatile shrub adds structure to borders, foundation plantings, and hedges. Native to the eastern half of the US, Smooth Viburnum prefers full sun and moist soil, but can tolerate a wide range of soil conditions, including wet soil or areas near streams or ponds. Plant in groups for better berry production. The berries are edible but very acidic and may cause mild stomach upset. This deciduous shrub will lose its leaves in winter. Common names include Smooth Witherod and Possumhaw Viburnum.
