Sunset Sempervivum, commonly called hens and chicks, adds unique form and texture to containers and gardens. Succulent foliage grows in tight rosettes that multiple to form dense mounds. Each fleshy leaf is emerald green at the base and brilliant red at the tip. Plants take on orange hues in cool weather. Unusual, fleshy flower spikes attract butterflies. (Sempervivum tectorum)
To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low
temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.
If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will
survive the winter temperatures in your area.
If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack
of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).

Hens live for about three years before sending up a large, thick flower stalk bearing star-shaped blooms. Hens die after flowering, making space for the developing chicks to take over and begin making their own offsets to continue he cycle. Plants are easy to grow, but require well-drained soil. Gravel or sandy mixes work well for containers. This low maintenance plant is deer resistant and drought tolerant once established.
